Toccoa, GA – Ten Injured in Serious Car Accident at Big A Rd & Rothell Rd
Toccoa, GA (May 19, 2022) – Around 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, May 17, ten people were seriously injured in a car accident that took place at an intersection in Toccoa.
According to Georgia State Patrol officials, the accident occurred around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Big A Road and Rothell Road. The driver of an SUV was traveling in the area when they pulled into the intersection and their vehicle was nearly struck by a cement truck. The cement truck driver swerved to avoid the collision and slammed into Malibu, which then struck a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The pickup truck then collided with a Hyundai Santa Fe. The driver of the initial SUV fled the scene without stopping.
Paramedics and numerous other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. The 69-year-old driver of the pickup truck was severely injured and rushed to the hospital by medical helicopter. A family of four was in the Malibu and all of the victims were taken to the hospital. They have since been identified as a 33-year-old woman, a 35-year-old man, a 5-year-old child, and a 3-year-old child.
Another family was in the Hyundai and all of the parties were also hospitalized. They have been identified as a 27-year-old woman, a 6-year-old child, a 3-year-old child, a 2-year-old child, and a 6-year-old child. The 23-year-old driver of the cement truck was not hurt.
The roadway was blocked in the area for several hours as police worked to clear the scene.
No further details have been released. The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
