Savannah, GA – One Dead, One Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on I-16 at Lynes Pkwy

Savannah, GA – One Dead, One Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on I-16 at Lynes Pkwy

Savannah, GA (July 27, 2021) – Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol say that one person is dead and another is injured after a wrong-way crash occurred early Friday morning, July 23, in Savannah.

Officers say that the incident occurred on Interstate 16 in Savannah around 1:40 a.m. Troopers released the findings of their initial report from the scene, which indicated that a black BMW was headed westbound in the eastbound lanes of the interstate near Lynes Parkway (also known as Interstate 516).

Troopers searched the area and found that the BMW collided with a green garbage truck just before exit 164.

The eastbound lanes were completely closed until around 5:00 a.m. as crews removed the wreckage. Troopers said the driver of the BMW, a 20-year-old man from Beaufort, died as a result of the crash. The injured victim was transported to an area medical center by ambulance, though it’s unclear if they were traveling in the dump truck or in the BMW.

The accident remains under investigation, and further details on those involved have not been released.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
