Riverdale, GA – UPDATE: Four Killed, One Hospitalized After Head-on Crash on Hwy 138
Riverdale, GA (July 27, 2021) – Officers have released further details after an accident occurred on Sunday morning, July 25, at a Riverdale intersection, leaving four people dead and a driver critically injured.
Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol say that two adults, a child, and a fetus died in a head-on car crash that occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. Initial reports state that the incident happened shortly after an ambulance crew knocked on a stopped pickup truck’s window to wake the suspect driver, who was slumped over the wheel.
Clayton County police say that the driver, identified only as a 37-year-old man, appeared confused and sped away after EMS checked on him.
The man then hit an SUV about a mile away on Georgia Highway 138 near Riverdale. Three victims traveling inside the SUV were killed, including a 34-year-old woman, her unborn child, and her 8-year-old son. The driver of the SUV, identified as a 33-year-old man, remains in critical condition at an area medical center.
The driver who caused the crash was also pronounced dead at the scene. The roadway was blocked in the area for an extended period of time as police cleared the area and conducted the on-scene portion of their investigation.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues, and toxicology reports are pending.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim in hopes of a full recovery.
