Macon, GA – UPDATE: Man Killed, Six Injured in Boat Accident at Lake Tobesofkee in Bibb Co
Macon, GA (July 27, 2021) – Officers have released further details after a boating accident in Bibb County that occurred on Saturday morning, July 24, leaving one person dead and six more victims seriously injured.
Georgia officials are still determining whether criminal charges are merited in the boat crash, which killed one man and injured six others.
All six people who were injured in the late-night collision were transported to the hospital via ambulance but have since been released and are recovering at home.
Police say that the six injured people worked at a local restaurant alongside the deceased victim, a 22-year-old assistant manager. He suffered a skull injury in the accident and later died from blunt force trauma at an area medical center.
All seven victims were aboard an anchored pontoon boat after 2:00 a.m. at Lake Tobesofkee when they were struck by a speedboat.
Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Mark McKinnon said that two people traveling on the speedboat abandoned their vessel and left the lake. Those people were later found at a nearby home, and McKinnon added that the driver of the boat may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident.
McKinnon said the state agency will complete its investigation and present its findings to prosecutors. McKinnon said that the entire process could take up to three months.
No further details have been released but the investigation remains ongoing.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
