Lakemont, GA – Officer Killed in Fatal Head-on Collision on US-441
Lakemont, GA (September 2, 2021) – On Wednesday, September 1, an officer was killed in a fatal head-on collision in Lakemont.
According to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened on US-441 around its intersection with GA-15. The accident occurred when a DUI driver crossed over the centerline of traffic and struck a pickup truck being driven by a female officer. The accident led to extensive damages to the involved vehicles.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. The 26-year-old officer from Mountain City was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries.
The at-fault driver was quickly determined to be under the influence at the time of the accident. The party, identified as a 41-year-old man, was charged with DUI and first-degree vehicular homicide. He could also be facing more future charges.
The roadway temporarily shut down the roadway until police cleared the scene.
No further details have been released but the investigation remains ongoing.
