Jasper Co, GA – Three Killed in Thomasville Helicopter Crash at Wildlife Preserve
Jasper Co, GA (September 19, 2021) – On Wednesday evening, September 15, a helicopter crash occurred in the dense woods of central Georgia, leaving three people dead.
The helicopter crashed in a national wildlife preserve, a federal investigator said Friday.
The Robinson R66 helicopter scattered debris over a 125-foot path, indicating a high-energy impact, Aaron McCarter, an air safety investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, reported.
He added that two pilots and a passenger died in the crash, which happened on Wednesday evening. Officers did not immediately release the victims’ identities.
Initial reports state that a helicopter took off from Thomasville, about 180 miles south of the crash site, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Authorities reported the craft missing about two hours later.
Search teams then combed the woods in rural Jasper County and discovered the wreckage on Thursday afternoon. It’s unclear if any other victims sustained injuries in the accident.
Officials don’t know what caused the crash, though McCarter said the NTSB’s investigation is ongoing.
He said the NTSB should release preliminary findings on the crash within the next few weeks.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families of the deceased victims. Our thoughts are with any injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
