Hart Co, GA – One Killed, Two Injured in Race Track Accident at Hartwell Speedway

Hart Co, GA - One Killed, Two Injured in Race Track Accident at Hartwell Speedway

Hart Co, GA (Jule 4, 2021) – On Saturday evening, July 3, a serious accident at a Georgia race track left one person dead and two others seriously injured.

Deputies with the Hart County Sheriff’s Office said that the incident happened during Saturday night’s Fourth of July weekend dirt track races at the Hartwell Speedway in front of a full house.

Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said that one of the cars on the track in a late-night race crashed into the retaining wall then flew into the crowd, with parts flying through a chain-link fence that was supposed to protect the spectators at the race.

One man from Royston was killed after debris hit him, and another man and a 9-year old child sustained serious injuries. The two injured victims were transported to an area medical center by ambulance in serious but stable condition.

Cleveland added that the driver of the racecar that crashed wasn’t hurt.

Problems with the retaining walls or safety netting at the track were not reported but investigators are still trying to determine the car’s debris reached the fans in the stands.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
