Thomasville, GA – Fatal Accident Claims The Life Of Beloved Former Band Director
Thomasville, GA (March 29, 2023) On Wednesday afternoon around 4:15 p.m., a fatal accident occurred when a driver failed to yield on GA 38. Kaitlyn Wills was driving west on GA 38 in her Toyota Corolla, while Carl Mayhall was heading south on Gatlin Creek Road.
Mayhall stopped at the stop sign but then attempted to cross over the westbound lanes of GA 38 without yielding to Wills, causing Wills to collide with Mayhall’s Honda Acc
ord on the driver’s side. The impact caused Wills to come to an uncontrolled final rest in the median of GA 38 facing west, while Mayhall’s car traveled across the median and hit the guard rail before coming to rest against the north guard rail.
Upon responding to the incident, the Georgia State Patrol had to extricate Mayhall from the vehicle and then called EMS, who took both Wills and Mayhall to Archbold Medical Center. Mayhall was later pronounced dead.
One of Mayhall’s former students, Krissy Finch, took to Facebook to express the lifelong impact Mayhall had on her life. She described Mayhall as her favorite teacher of all time, a father figure, and one of the biggest personal cheerleaders she ever had in her corner. Mayhall was also Teacher of the Year in 1999, thanks to his caring demeanor and ability to push students to greatness.
Finch recounted how Mayhall had helped her learn to stand on her own two feet by selecting her for a Debussy flute solo her senior year and working with her for hours to improve. She said it had been 22 years since Mayhall was her teacher, but his impact on her life was still palpable.
Mayhall was 70 years old at the time of his passing, but his legacy will endure forever in the hearts of all his students and former educators.
