Elbert Co, GA – UPDATE: One Killed, Four Injured in School Bus Crash on Hwy 368 in Elbert
Elbert Co, GA (July 4, 2021) – Further details have been released following a school bus accident that left one person dead and several other victims injured on Wednesday, June 30.
Per reports from deputies with the Elbert County’s Sheriff’s Office, one person died after the head-on crash, which involved a car and a school bus. According to Brianna Armour with the Elbert County Schools Transportation Department, the accident happened around 6:30 a.m. on Highway 368 in Elbert County.
The car involved was attempting to negotiate a sharp turn on Highway 368 when the driver lost control of their vehicle. The school bus then collided head-on with the vehicle. Officers reportedly added the bus driver attempted to avoid the car and went into a ditch.
The car caught fire and a person traveling in the car died as a result of the impact of the collision and the resulting blaze, according to Armour.
Four students and the driver were on the bus and were all taken to Elbert Memorial Hospital via ambulance for further treatment. They suffered minor injuries but are expected to recover.
No further details have been released but the investigation continues.
