Covington, GA (April 9, 2023) – Five people were killed in a fatal car accident on a major roadway in Covington on the afternoon of Saturday, April 8.

According to Newton County officials, the accident happened in the afternoon hours on GA-142 just past Adams Circle. Police confirmed that a van was traveling on the highway when it was involved in a serious crash with a black pickup truck. The two vehicles were extensively damaged, and the van became completely engulfed in flames.

Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. A total of five people were tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries. A sixth person, who was identified as the driver of the truck, was critically injured and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Police blocked off a large portion of the road as they worked to clear the scene. They discovered through their investigation that the driver of the pickup truck allegedly left their lane of traffic. They did not say if the driver will face criminal charges for the accident.

The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues at this time.
