Columbus, GA (February 1, 2022) – One person was killed in a fatal pedestrian accident that happened in Columbus on Sunday night, January 30.

According to Muscogee County officials, the accident happened around 9 p.m. at 1000 Fort Benning Road. A pedestrian was walking in the area when they were suddenly struck by a vehicle that was also traveling in the area. It is believed that the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.

Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. The pedestrian, who has not yet been formally identified, was rushed to Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown with severe injuries. They were tragically pronounced dead around 9 p.m.

The roadway was blocked in the area of the accident for an extended period of time as police worked to clear the scene.

No further details have been released but the investigation continues. Police will update with more information as it becomes available.
