Cairo, GA – Couple Killed in Fatal House Fire on Copeland Ave

Cairo, GA (October 19, 2022) – On Monday morning, October 17, a couple was killed in a fatal house fire that took place in Cairo.

According to Grady County officials, the fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. on Copeland Avenue. Officials confirmed that a home caught on fire and the fire quickly engulfed the entire home. The structure collapsed as soon as fire crews arrived.

After a few minutes, bystanders told fire crews that there could be victims inside the home. Fire crews were able to gain access to the bedroom but found nobody inside. They later determined that the two people inside, identified as an elderly couple, were sleeping in the living room that night.

Paramedics and numerous other responders were called to the scene. The elderly couple was tragically pronounced dead at the scene of the accident due to traumatic injuries caused by the fire. Police confirmed that the older female victim was wheelchair-bound.

The area was blocked off for an extended period of time as police worked to clear the scene.
