Alto, GA – Pedestrian Accident Leads to Injuries at Lee Arrendale State Prison
Alto, GA (November 29, 2022) – A serious pedestrian accident with injuries took place outside a prison in Alto on Thanksgiving evening, November 24.
According to Georgia State Patrol officials, the collision happened in the evening hours on the Gainesville Highway in front of Lee Arrendale State Prison. Police claim that an adult female was walking east in the area when she started to cross the street at a crosswalk with flashing lights. She was suddenly struck by a driver in a Hyundai Elantra that was headed northbound. The driver failed to yield, causing the accident. They stayed on scene after the collision occurred.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other local responders were immediately called to the scene. The pedestrian, who was identified as a 52-year-old woman, was seriously injured and taken to Habersham County Medical Center for treatment. Nobody in the vehicle, driven by a 39-year-old man, sustained injuries.
The driver told police that he did not see the pedestrian due to her dark clothing. Police charged him with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. His vehicle sustained visible damage due to the force of the collision.
The road was blocked in several lanes of traffic following the accident until police cleared the scene.
No further details have been released but the investigation into the collision continues. Police will update with new information as it becomes available.
We offer our warmest sympathies to the pedestrian who has been hurt in this accident with hopes of a speedy recovery.
