Darvocet which contains propoxyphene was prescribed to patients to relieve pain.  Patients have been prescribed Darvocet since 1957.

On November 17, 2010 the Us Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pulled Darvocet off the market because of scientific evidence that shows it can damage the heart even at recommended doses or cause fatal cardiac abnormalities.  The FDA states that there are more than 2100 reports of serious which include suicide, overdose, cardiac arrest and death.  It is estimated Darvon and Darvocet overdose and has killed 1,000 to 2,000 Americans over just the past five years.

The main reason for these deaths is that the drug is converted into a metabolite that is toxic to the heart and lasts longer in the body than the original compound, resulting in cardiac depression. Adverse cardiac events associated with propoxyphene include an interruption of heart transmission of electrical impulses, slowed heartbeats and a decreased ability of the heart to contract properly.
